Xavier de Le Rue is one of the best big mountain snowboarders in the world, if not the best. He is also very fortunate to be alive after getting buried by an avalanche in 2008. This video shows how it happened and how he survived, and it serves as a reminder that riding fresh powder in the steeps is inherently dangerous. Ligety, who runs a summer racing camp on Mount Hood, won his third straight World Cup opener last weekend. He will compete for as many as four Olympic medals in Sochi 2014. This perspective shows how subtle and nuanced Ligety is in the gates, even as he pounds through them.

Most shred edits are all about sick lines and rad stunts. Awesome eye-candy footage but not much in the way of story line or dramatic tension. Not so with McConkey, the new biopic about legendary freeskier Shane McConkey from Match Stick Productions. This film is imbued with tension from the opening scene because you know that at some point this amazingly charismatic character who has turned reckless living into an art form is going to push it too far, and he is going to die.

Check out this edit from Eric Pollard and the crew at Nimbus Independent, shot in fresh early-season snow on the south side of Mount Hood last season. Pollard broke his leg in Russia not long after recording this footage, thus the "four-day season." But at least he got in four excellent days of shooting and shredding, enough for a highly entertaining three minutes and 43 seconds.
